Coral Bleaching: A Dire Threat – Coral reefs are often referred to as the rainforests of the sea due to their incredible biodiversity. When water temperatures rise, corals expel the symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) that live within their tissues.
This process, known as bleaching, leaves the corals white and vulnerable. Without the algae, the corals lose a significant source of nutrition and are more susceptible to disease and death.
